December 2011: Guidance in Serious Games - work in progress
Starting from the reviewers' feedbacks, ‘for future releases it should be an objective to deeper integrate coaching and guidance into the Mirror apps – thus effectively reducing the need for external consulting and coaching support’, imaginary carried out some interesting theoretical studies about how to integrate the concept of guidance into games.
The main focus is about Vygotsky (1978) and his main theory. For this author learning occurs within a social context, and interaction between learners and their peers is a necessary part of the learning process. For this reason, Vygotsky describes those capabilities that are beyond the learner on their own, but that can be carried out with the assistance of more knowledgeable peers, as capabilities in the zone of proximal development. The main goal and challenge for WP7 in Y2 of the project will be to maximize this zone of proximal development into the game (translate theoretical background into a ‘technical background’) and bring the users to be as much independent as possible.
Ongoing studies and new developments will be published as soon as elaborated!
